New York Historic Beer Series – Vol. 4

Heartland Brewery Historic Beer Series

Lion Brewery Heller Bock

Bright gold in color, this beer was originally brewed to celebrate the arrival of spring. Malt forward “bready” taste with a hoppy aroma. 6.5% alc/vol.

Did you know there were 30 breweries in Manhattan alone before Prohibition? To honor this legacy, we have created The New York Historic Beer Series. It is our tribute to the original NYC brewing pioneers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As our fourth offering of the series, we’re bringing back Lion Brewery Heller Bock.

Five years after immigrating to the United States, Swiss-German Emanuel Bernheimer became the partner of another German immigrant, James Speyers and founded the Lion Brewery  in1857.  At its peak, the Lion Brewery occupied about six square city blocks, from Central Park West to Amsterdam Avenue and from 107th to 109th Street. A group of Catholic Bavarians  helped build the Lion Brewery and when completed, they held masses in the Brewery on Sunday mornings. Another interesting tidbit; The Lion Brewery was the first American ?institution to brew pilsner beer.

We produced our Heller Bock to honor our NYC craft beer forefathers, so grab yourself a Lion Brewery Heller Bock and Prost like the beer drinkers that came before us!
